Fierce fighting in Gaza as more civilians set to leave

Gaza has suffered another fierce fighting overnight, with a live feed capturing sounds of explosions and bright flames on the horizon.

The Israeli military said it killed dozens of Hamas fighters, having earlier said its troops had broken through the group’s defensive lines.

More civilians are expected to leave Gaza via the Rafah crossing today; the UN says more than 400 people used the crossing yesterday. It was the first time the crossing was opened since the war broke out.

Israel has been bombing Gaza since 7 October when Hamas attacked civilians, killing 1,400 people and kidnapping 242 people, who are being held hostage in Gaza.

In response, Israel has killed more than 8,700 people in the retaliatory bombing.
