EU Parliament to hold extraordinary plenary session on anniversary of Ukraine invasion
An extraordinary plenary session of the European Parliament will convene in Brussels on 24 February 2026 to commemorate the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and to approve a €90 billion loan to Kyiv from European Union member states. The decision was made during the Parliament’s Conference of Presidents this week, following an initiative by the European Parliament’s President Roberta Metsola, according to internal sources from Euronews.
This session is significant as it will not only debate the ongoing war but also formally endorse the joint debt-funded loan to Ukraine, which was officially agreed upon by the 27 EU member states on Wednesday. The arrangement stipulates that Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic will be completely exempt from all financial obligations, including annual interest payments.
Approval from the Parliament is highly likely, as most political groups express support for financial and military assistance to Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa will travel to Ukraine on this occasion to mark the anniversary.
