Europe and the US impose sanctions on Iran
The UK, France, Germany and the United States have imposed new sanctions on Iran, accusing the country of supplying Russia with ballistic missiles for use in Ukraine.
These sanctions include restrictions on Iran Air’s ability to operate in the UK and Europe, along with travel bans and asset freezes targeting several Iranian individuals involved in facilitating military support for Russia.
During a visit to London, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed that Iranian forces had trained Russian troops to use short-range ballistic missiles, which could be deployed against Ukraine within weeks. Despite Iran’s repeated denials of supplying these weapons to Russia, Blinken emphasised that Russia is increasingly dependent on support from both Iran and North Korea to continue its war in Ukraine.
At a joint press conference with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Blinken stated that this partnership violates multiple UN Security Council resolutions. He also shared intelligence showing that dozens of Russian military personnel were trained in Iran to operate the Fath-360 missile system, which has a range of up to 75 miles (120 km).
