Manchester United are still to make a decision over David de Gea’s future at Old Trafford.

The Spain international, who made his 500th club appearance on Sunday against Newcastle United, is in the final 12 months of his contract at Old Trafford.

As is the case with most of their players, United have the option to extend de Gea’s deal by another 12 months. De Gea remains the firm first choice goalkeeper at the club with Dean Henderson shipped out on loan to Nottingham Forest in the summer.

And while ten Hag says he is happy with the 31-year-old’s performances, he refused to be drawn on his long-term future at the club.

‘We didn’t make a decision on him but what I can say is I’m really happy with David De Gea as a ‘keeper,’ ten Hag said.

‘The first two games of the season were not his best performances but after it, you see he brings us a lot for the defence, the defensive department, he gives stability and, as a person also, I like him.

‘I can cooperate really well with him but first we go to the winter and then we will talk about how we deal with situations.’

Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot finds themselves in similar positions with their deals also set to end in the summer of 2023 with the option of a further year.

Ten Hag however insists his focus remains solely on the pitch.

‘In this moment, we only think about performing, we have a lot of games to go so I don’t want to get interfered by talks, we have to focus on football, on performances and not negotiating, so that’s what we’ll do now.’

United are back in action against Tottenham on Wednesday evening. Ten Hag was linked with the Spurs job in 2021 following Jose Mourinho’s departure.

Reports that followed suggested the Dutchman failed to impress the Tottenham hierarchy. ‘I will never talk about interest or what else, it’s also not interesting,’ ten Hag said.

‘I’m here and I’m happy to be here and I want to get the best out of here.’
