When Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) almost lost his son Kyle (Huey Quinn) for good in Emmerdale recently, he was left reflecting on the violent way he’s conducted his life so far.
Kyle faced prison as a result of shooting Al Chapman (Michael Wildman) when he came upon Al and Cain fighting in the barn. A terrified Kyle picked up the gun that his dad had brought to scare Al – who was having an affair with Cain’s sister Chas (Lucy Pargeter) – and shot Al dead.
In the aftermath of this, Kyle’s mum Amy (Natalie Ann Jamieson) decided to go for sole custody of her son, not wanting him to grow up under the influence of Cain’s special brand of toxic masculinity. Cain was left shocked when he was forced to face the effect his behaviour had had on his son and when Kyle insisted he wanted to live with his dad, Cain knew he had to change.
Cain’s new leaf is severely tested in upcoming episodes when he goes to his garage after hours and catches Nicky (Lewis Cope) trying to steal a car he’s been working on. The two men exchange words, and Cain quickly reverts to dealing with things the way he always has – by punching Nicky in the stomach.
A furious and frightened Nicky grabs a spanner to retaliate, even more outraged because Caleb (William Ash) has also appeared but refuses to intervene. Before Nicky can strike a blow, Cain instinctively punches him hard in the face.
In the Woolpack later for Moira Natalie J. Robb)’s birthday, Cain is not in a festive mood and Moira picks up on this and questions him. He tells her what happened at the garage, and that he’s disappointed in himself because of the way he reacted to the situation with Nicky. Moira reassures him that he’s making real progress with his anger.

Meanwhile Nicky is seething about what happened, and Caleb is doing his best to curb his secret son’s frustration as his anger and impetuous behaviour threatens to undo all of Caleb’s careful planning.
It seems like Cain isn’t the only one with anger management issues…
