During demolition of Minnesota high school, 104-year-old time capsule unearthed

Construction workers in Owatonna, Minnesota made a surprising discovery during a demolition project at a former high school – a time capsule from 1920. The capsule was found buried in the rubble as the crew was tearing down the front pillars and doors of the school.

The time capsule was opened during a community event, revealing a treasure trove of items from a bygone era. Inside, they found a roster of teachers and administrators, the high school newspaper, local newspapers, and financial statements from 1920.

“We were thrilled to discover that a time capsule had been placed in the cornerstone of the high school,” said Jeff Elstad, the school district’s superintendent. “It’s always exciting to learn more about the history of our community and the people who had the foresight to build a great school that would serve so many students for generations.”

The Owatonna High School Museum Committee is now working with the Steele County Historical Society to preserve the items found in the time capsule. Some items will be displayed at the school, while others will be added to the historical society’s collections.

The discovery has allowed the community to reflect on its local history and preserve it for future generations. “We appreciate the historical significance of the time capsule and are committed to continuing to preserve our history for generations to come,” Elstad added.
