Sharp drop in number of people on furlough since pandemic began
There has been a sharp fall in the number of people on furlough, with young people moving off the government scheme fastest, new figures show.
At the end of June, 1.9 million people were still on furlough, the lowest level since the pandemic began and half a million fewer than in May.
In the last three months, younger people came off furlough twice as fast as all other age brackets.
Almost 600,000 under-25s had left the scheme in that time, the Treasury said.
More than a million people in hospitality and retail have left the scheme over the last three months.
In May last year – at the peak of the pandemic – nearly nine million people were on furlough.
The furlough scheme has been extended several times, but will end on 30 September.
The government will ask firms to make bigger contributions as it winds down the scheme further from Sunday.
