Zelenskyy: Russian army trying to create impression of ceasefire – while continuing attempts to advance
Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russia is already violating Vladimir Putin’s “Easter truce”.
He accuses Russian forces of trying to “create the general impression” of a ceasefire, while still trying to advance and inflict losses on Ukraine.
Posting on X, Ukraine’s president shared an update from the country’s commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, as of 6am local time.
“Across various frontline directions, there have already been 59 cases of Russian shelling and 5 assaults by Russian units,” it said.
Russia had also carried out “dozens” of drone strikes, the update said.
It added there had been “combat engagements” in the Donetsk, Pokrovsk and Novopavlivka areas, and near Stepove in the Zaporizhzhia direction.
“Everywhere our warriors are responding as the enemy deserves, based on the specific combat situation,” Zelenskyy said.
“Ukraine will continue to act symmetrically,” he added.
Between 6pm yesterday and midnight on Sunday, Zelenskyy said there had been 387 instances of shelling and 19 assaults by Russian forces.
He said drones were used by Russia 290 times.
Zelenskyy added: “Overall, as of Easter morning, we can state that the Russian army is attempting to create the general impression of a ceasefire, while in some areas still continuing isolated attempts to advance and inflict losses on Ukraine.
“Russia must fully comply with the conditions of the ceasefire.
“Ukraine’s proposal to implement and extend the ceasefire for 30 days after midnight tonight remains on the table.
“We will act in accordance with the actual situation on the ground.”
