Donald Trump indicted over classified documents case
Former US president Donald Trump has been accused of mishandling classified documents, according to reports from US media. Trump, 76, now faces seven charges, though specific details have not been disclosed to the public.
It marks the second indictment against Trump and is the first instance of a former president facing federal charges. Despite the legal challenges ahead, he is actively campaigning for a return to the White House in 2024, and legal experts say the indictment does not pose any restrictions on Trump’s eligibility to run for the presidency again.
Trump took to his social media site – Truth Social, to assert his innocence. He revealed that he had been summoned to appear at a federal court in Miami, Florida, on Tuesday afternoon. It is expected he will be arrested during this court appearance and informed of the charges brought against him.
Trump’s attorney Jim Trusty told CNN that Trump had received a summons document detailing the charges, which include conspiracy, false statements, obstruction of justice, and illegal retention of classified documents under the Espionage Act.
