Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Dominik Szoboszlai will miss Liverpool’s next two matches with a hamstring injury, although it is not thought to be too serious.

The Hungarian has been a big hit at Anfield since arriving from RB Leipzig in the summer, scoring four goals in all competitions and sliding straight into a regular place in the starting XI.

However, he will miss the Reds’ next two games, which come in the FA Cup third round against Arsenal on Sunday and then the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals against Fulham on Wednesday.

It may be the case that the 23-year-old does not miss any Premier League action, possibly returning for the trip to Bournemouth on 21 January.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Klopp said: ‘It’s an injury. Muscle, hamstring. We will have to see.

‘Dom is very positive, not a lot of pain but no chance for Sunday. Not for then Wednesday. Then we will see. After that, hopefully, he might be back but we don’t know.’

Szoboszlai joins Andrew Robertson, Kostas Tsimikas, Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago Alcantara on Liverpool’s injury list.

Klopp’s selection headaches have not been helped by Mohamed Salah going to the Africa Cup of Nations to represent Egypt and Wataru Endo heading off to the Asian Cup to play for Japan.

It is yet to be seen how long the two players will be missing for the Reds, depending on how far their nations go in the competitions, and Klopp admits he would love to see them come back as soon as possible.

‘I said if I wish them good luck it would be a lie,’ Klopp said on his message to the departing stars. ‘Hopefully they are out in the group stages but it’s not likely.

‘Good luck and hopefully they can come back healthy. I am pretty positive we will find a way [to replace them] but we have to show that.’

The Africa Cup of Nations runs from 13 January – 11 February, with the Asian Cup played from 12 January – 10 February.
