Dominant Brighton breeze past Newcastle 3-0 – Premier League result
The only Premier League fixture on Saturday was a vital game between Brighton and Newcastle United, with both teams desperate for the 3 points given their closeness to the relegation zone.
Whilst Brighton have been struggling for goals recently, they didn’t here, scoring 3 wonderful goals to move them 6 points clear of 18th placed Fulham.
Terrific Trossard effort gave Brighton the lead against Newcastle
In a rather uneventful first-half of this Premier League fixture between Brighton and Newcastle, it finally livened up right on the stroke of half-time.
Brighton’s Jöel Veltman delivered a long ball from inside his own half down the wing towards team-mate Leandro Trossard.
After a superb first-touch by the Belgian, Trossard turned with the ball, dribbling along the edge of the box towards the D.
Trossard then unleashed a beautifully curled effort in the bottom right corner past Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka to give the hosts the lead in this Saturday night Premier League clash.
Fraser almost equalised for Newcastle
Newcastle had their best chance in the 49th minute, when Ryan Fraser’s effort was denied by the outside of the post.
Joelinton’s pass found Miguel Almirón at the edge of Brighton’s box inside the D.
Almiron then played it to the left-side of the box, finding an open Fraser.
The Newcastle winger hit the ball first-time, curling it towards the far corner of the goal, but was unlucky not to score when his shot hit the right post and flew away from goal.
Fantastic Welbeck finish doubled Brighton’s lead
Moments after Newcastle’s Fraser hit the post at the other end, Brighton replied 2 minutes later through Danny Welbeck’s strike.
Trossard received the ball mid-way into the Newcastle half, before playing it out wide onto the left-wing towards Welbeck.
The former England striker dribbled the ball inwards, going against Newcastle defender Javier Manquillo.
However, Manquillo didn’t get tight enough, allowing Welbeck to cut in on his stronger right foot, where he then curled his shot into the bottom right corner out of the reach of Dubravka.
Maupay’s first goal in 10 games gave Brighton their third goal
Brighton’s third goal in this Premier League fixture against Newcastle came in the 68th minute thanks to Neal Maupay’s first goal in 10 games.
After lovely build-up play by Brighton, the ball eventually found Pascal Groß on the right-wing.
The Brighton playmaker was patient, Cruyff-turning his way into space before unleashing a rapid cross in the centre of Newcastle’s box.
The ball found Maupay, whose volley steered the ball past Dubravka to finally end his goal-drought and give Brighton a convincing lead in this crucial Premier League game.
