Divers are almost 48 hours into their frantic search for a paddle boarder who ‘vanished’ in a lake.

People were heard ‘screaming for help’ after a man fell into the water near Crosby beach, in Waterloo, on Friday afternoon.

Emergency services rushed to Marine Lake, next to the Crosby Lakeside Adventure centre and Lakeside restaurant complex, at 4.50pm.

Merseyside Police, fire crews and search and rescue were called to the scene and an air ambulance and a coastguard helicopter were also seen.

Families visiting the area on Friday said they saw a paddleboard ‘floating’ as they believe the man was trying to go after it.

Despite best efforts from the public to help him, eyewitnesses said he ‘vanished’, leaving people ‘screaming’ and ‘calling for help’.

One person said: ‘It was awful. My tummy still feels sick over it now. Just waiting to hear some sort of update somehow.

‘His board floated over to us. We didn’t know it was his at first and through it was a bit strange. So, so sad. Just hope to god they find him for all his family’s sake.’

Another added: ‘He was trying to go after the board but it kept blowing further away, he tried to swim back but just vanished. That lake needs manning.

‘People did attempt to go to him but after he went down there was no visible point for them to swim too, it was awful.’

Police confirmed emergency services remain at the scene of the incident today.

‘A search is ongoing at the Marine Lake after a man got into difficulty in the water on Friday and emergency services are still at the scene today,’ a statement read.

‘It remains a priority and while the search is ongoing we are still asking the public to avoid the area.’
