Diablo 4 – it may never end (pic: Blizzard)
Not only is season one and two of Diablo 4 already well underway but so are two expansions, as Blizzard prepares for a long haul.
It officially only came out this week, but it goes without saying that Diablo 4 is a massive hit. Diablo 3 had two major expansions and while they came out several years afterwards they were very popular with fans, and it looks like Blizzard is going to try and repeat the trick with Diablo 4.
Diablo 3 was a live service game before the phrase even existed and Diablo 4 is making no pretence about it, with plans for constant free and paid-for updates.
That means that the game’s new content is divided into seasons, with Blizzard revealing it’s almost finished work on the first one and is just starting on season two. But that’s not all: ‘We’re working on expansion one, we’re kicking off expansion two,’ said franchise head Rod Fergusson.
‘All that’s happening right now and we haven’t even launched the game yet,’ reveals Fergusson, who insisted that Diablo 4 will have a lot better support than the last game.
‘We’re going to be supporting Diablo 4 for years to come; very rich seasons, much richer than we had in Diablo 3,’ he told Kinda Funny Games.
Blizzard has spoken about future support but there’s not yet a roadmap for the game and everything has been quite vague pre-launch.
Fergusson’s comments suggest that the plan is to support the game for many years to come, much in the manner of games like Destiny 2 and Rainbow Six Siege.
Even with its more limited support it was still 11 years between Diablo 3 and 4 and this makes it sound like it will be at least that before Diablo 5.
That’s assuming there aren’t any major controversies post-launch, as it’s a bit too early to tell about that yet.
There has already been some discontent about the price of in-game items, but it’s unclear how much that’s going to blow up now that the game is available to everyone.
