Demonstrators rally in Washington ahead of Trump’s inauguration
Thousands of protesters, predominantly women, took to the streets of Washington, D.C., on Saturday, voicing their opposition to President-elect Donald Trump just days before his inauguration.
The annual People’s March, previously known as the Women’s March, began in 2017 and has since become a tradition. This year’s event was organised by a coalition of groups dedicated to challenging “Trumpism,” as stated on their official website. Similar demonstrations also took place in New York City and Seattle.
The rallies coincided with Trump’s arrival in the capital for a series of events leading up to his swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Monday.
While Saturday’s march in Washington saw fewer participants compared to previous years, it still drew thousands of supporters. Protesters assembled at three different parks before converging at the Lincoln Memorial for the main rally.
According to its website, the People’s March is a collective effort by groups with “intersecting identities” and diverse priorities, championing causes such as women’s rights, immigration, and climate change.
