    Harvey Weinstein accusers welcome rape and sexual assault conviction

    BBC News says accusers of movie producer Harvey Weinstein have welcomed the guilty verdicts on the rape and sexualweinstein found guilty assault case against the former Hollywood mogul. 

    Actress Rose McGowan told the BBC “this is a great day” while others said the verdict brought hope to victims that their voices would be heard. 

    Weinstein, 67, was convicted of third-degree rape and a first-degree criminal sexual act. But he was cleared of his most serious count of predatory sexual assault. 

    Weinstein faces up to 25 years in prison over the guilty verdicts relating to two women. His lawyers say he will appeal. 

    “I’m innocent. How can this happen in America?” Weinstein’s lawyer quoted his client as saying.

    Thousands caught in floods in Indonesia’s sinking capital

    Arab News says floods that have crippled much of Indonesia’s capital worsened Tuesday, inundating thousands of floods in indonesiahomes and buildings, including the presidential palace, and halting transport networks, officials and witnesses said.

    Overnight rains caused rivers to burst their banks in greater Jakarta starting Sunday, sending muddy water up to 1.5 meters deep into more residential and commercial areas.

    Floodwaters entered parts of Indonesia’s presidential palace complex Tuesday morning but the situation was brought under control with water pumps.

    As coronavirus spreads, WHO urges world to ‘prepare for potential pandemic’

    France24 says the World Health Organisation said the new coronavirus epidemic had “peaked” in China but warned that a rise in cases elsewhere was “deeply concerning” and that all countries should prepare for a possible pandemic.coronavirus - WHO gives a warning of pandemic

    WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the peak in China occurred between January 23 and February 2 and the number of new cases there “has been declining steadily since then.”

    “This virus can be contained,” he told reporters in Geneva, praising China for helping to prevent an even bigger spread of the disease through unprecedented lockdowns and quarantines in or near the outbreak’s epicentre.

    Women’s life expectancy falls in England’s poorest areas while North-South health gap grows

    Sky News says the life expectancy of women has fallen in the most deprived areas of England, according to a new womens life expectancy falls in englands poorest areasreport. 

    Professor Sir Michael Marmot’s study comes ten years after his first analysis of data tracking the health gap between rich and poor. 

    The new report, Health Equity in England: The Marmot Review 10 Years On, found that the life expectancy of women in the most deprived areas fell by 0.3 years between 2010-12 to 2016-18 while people in the richest increased by around 0.5 years.

    An Antarctica heatwave melted 20% of an Island’s snow in 9 days

    CNN says a nine-day heatwave scorched Anrtartica’s northern tip earlier this month. New NASA images show that nearly a quarter of an Antarctic island’s snow cover melted in that time – an increasingly common result of climate change.climate change melts 20 percent snow in antartica in just 9 days

    The images show Eagle Island on the northeastern peninsula of the icy continent at the start and end of this month’s Antarctic heatwave. By the end of the nine-day heatwave, much of the land beneath the island’s ice cap was exposed, and pools of meltwater opened up on its surface. 

    Antarctica experienced its hottest day on record earlier this month, peaking at 64.9 degrees Fahrenheit. According to NASA, Los Angeles measured the same temperature that day.
