After days of far-right rampages in towns across the land, peaceful people last night came together to unite against the cowardly hate mobs.
A sea of anti-racist protesters emerged to retake “our streets” in heartwarming scenes repeated in Bristol, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield, Oldham and Walthamstow in London. Police had been bracing themselves for widespread disorder and King Charles was being kept updated daily about the riots around the country, according to Buckingham Palace.
It was feared 100 “planned events” would cause violent disorder in 41 force areas and 6,000 police officers were on standby. But instead incredible scenes emerged as peaceful protests popped up all over the country.
Matt Hudson-Smith’s brutal two-word response tells full story after being pipped to gold
Matt Hudson-Smith came agonisingly close to our first gold medal in the Olympic 400m since 1924 on Wednesday night.
He lost by the narrowest of margins as he was pipped on the line by American Quincy Hall who took gold in 43.4, with Hudson-Smith in 43.44. Muzala Samukonga of Zambia took bronze.
Hudson-Smith, 29, from Wolverhampton, was looking to follow in the footsteps of Eric Liddell, who refused to compete on a Sunday in the 100m of 1924, and was switched to the 400m. He won gold, and his story was immortalised in the Oscar-winning film ‘Chariots of Fire‘ which showed him training for the Games, also held in Paris.
Hudson-Smith, who once dreamt of being a footballer and was with Wolves academy as an 11-year-old before athletics became his life, narrowly missed out. Nicknamed ‘MHS’ by his team mates, he has spoken previously about contemplating taking his own life in 2021, but was in the form of his life going into the race.
Strictly Come Dancing staff expose ‘toxic’ work conditions and ‘extraordinary abuse’
BBC staffers have broken their silence on Strictly Come Dancing.
The show faces controversy after complaints from celebrity stars including Amanda Abbington and Zara McDermott. Other famous faces, including Laura Whitmore and Paralympian Will Bayley have also spoken out about their negative experiences.
Now some of the behind-the-scenes crew have had their say, with one former employee saying, “the whole culture was toxic, particularly for junior staff.” The anonymous staffer joined the programme when he was 18, revealing a celebrity screamed in his face.
“He was shouting and he was so close up in my face, I had to close my eyes as his spit flecks were hitting me,” he told BBC News. “The fact it was in front of everyone made me feel awful and helpless. People were stopping in the corridor to catch a glimpse of what was happening.” The star reportedly apologised, but the employee quickly left the BBC.
