Do you want to see multiplayer in the Cyberpunk sequel? (CD Projekt)
After cancelling the first Cyberpunk game’s multiplayer, it sounds like CD Projekt wants to try again with the sequel.
It’s easy to forget that Cyberpunk 2077 was always meant to have multiplayer. After some indecisiveness, CD Projekt eventually committed to incorporating it as a post-launch update.
When that never happened there were plans to make the multiplayer its own game but the whole premise was canned in 2021, and CD Projekt put all its energy into focusing on the main game and its Phantom Liberty story DLC.
CD Projekt has not publicly committed to taking another crack at multiplayer for Cyberpunk 2, but if a recent job listing is anything to go by, it sounds like there are plans for online modes of some sort.
The developer has posted multiple job listings for roles related to both Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4, including a lead producer and lead technical animator.
It’s the listing for a lead network engineer that’s caught peoples’ attention though, as it’s specifically related to Cyberpunk 2 and references online multiplayer.
‘You and your team will play a pivotal role in designing and implementing the network architecture and online systems,’ reads the listing.

Daily responsibilities also include maintaining ‘scalable and efficient network architectures for online features’ and ensuring ‘low-latency, high-performance online experiences for players.’
Granted, there’s no explicit mention of multiplayer, but it’s hard to imagine what else ‘low-latency, high-performance online experiences’ could be.

The real question is whether there’ll be just the one online mode or if Cyberpunk 2 will offer multiple options. If we want to stretch our imaginations, perhaps there’ll be an option that lets players run into each other and interact in the main game, and potentially team up for co-op missions.
The first game’s multiplayer was rumoured to feature deathmatch multiplayer and a co-op heist mode, in the same vein as GTA Online, with the latter using pre-made characters rather than whatever character you made in the base game.
If this was the case, it’d make sense for those ideas to be repurposed and implemented into Cyberpunk 2.
However, it’ll still be a long time until we see anything of substance regarding the sequel. There’s no official release window but with the game only entering the pre-production phase in May, Cyberpunk 2 isn’t expected to launch until 2029 or 2030.
In the meantime, CD Projekt’s main priority is The Witcher 4, since that’s scheduled for a 2027 release.
