Daily Express – Crushing blow to Tory Party in election wipeout

    July 5, 2024

The Daily Express is one of the few papers still firmly in the Conservative camp. The paper’s headline reads: “Crushing blow as Tories wiped out.”

The paper notes that more than a dozen senior Tories including cabinet ministers could lose their seats in what it calls a “brutal reckoning by voters after 14 years in government”.

Jacob Rees-Mogg blames Tory wipeout on ‘cabal’ who ousted Boris Johnson

Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has blamed the “cabal” who ousted Boris Johnson for the Tories’ election wipeout. The former business secretary called it a “terrible” night for Rishi Sunak’s party which looks on track to get just 131 seats in the House of Commons.

He said: “It’s clearly a terrible night for the Conservatives. There is no way of describing this other than a bad night for the Conservative Party.”

When asked where it went wrong, he said: “I think that there were issues changing the leader but I think we do have increasingly a presidential system and that people vote for a Prime Minister rather than for an individual member of Parliament.”

Liz Truss loses South West Norfolk seat and ‘goes missing’ before result

Liz Truss has been ousted from her seat in South West Norfolk – after “going missing”. The former PM, who was in power for just 50 days making her Britain’s shortest serving leader of all time, was defending a Tory majority of more than 26,000 votes in the rural seat in the east of England.

She has represented the constituency in the House of Commons since 2010, but this time round faced her strongest challenge yet from Labour’s Terry Jermy. The reading of the results was paused as officials were trying to find the former MP, who lost out to Labour’s Terry Jermy.

Candidates stood on the stage ready and waiting for the results to be read as Truss was nowhere to be found.

Nicola Sturgeon left speechless as she finds out about SNP wipeout

Nicola Sturgeon’s ashen-faced reaction to the General Election exit poll was captured on camera, as it was predicted the SNP would win just 10 seats.

Following the 2019 election, the SNP won 48 MPs – but the Scottish nationalists are expected to lose most of them during the course of the night.

Ms Sturgeon, who was appearing on ITV as the exit poll came in, was left speechless as her former party was forecast to win fewer seats than five years ago.

It comes as Labour is predicted to win a massive majority over the Conservative Party after six weeks of election campaigning.
