Craig Charles’ game show Moneybags has gone bust after Channel 4 cancelled the series after two seasons.

First airing in November 2021, Moneybags returned for a second 30-episode season in August last year, before eventually wrapping in September.

The format saw each week start with 10 new contestants and £1 million divided among 100 moneybags, in amounts ranging from £1,000 to £100,000.

Twenty bags were then chosen at random for each game; once a particular bag was chosen, it was then out of play for the rest of the week.

A conveyor belt known as the Money Belt then strecthed across the stage, with bags entering at one end and the host standing near a chute at the other.

The players would then compete in several rounds to try and win the different bags.

But now it appears to have been axed, despite being a huge hit with audiences.

The show had a ‘life-changing’ amount of money on offer (Picture: Channel 4)

‘Moneybags has a really big and loyal fan base and having Craig on board just made it perfect,’ a source told The Sun.

‘Unfortunately, Covid has once again played it’s part causing the production behind it to go bust.’

Starting in the 3pm timeslot to begin with, it was later moved to the coveted 5pm slot.

However, last month, the show’s producers Youngest Media, closed down and began the process of liquidation.

Last year Craig, who played Dave Lister on Red Dwarf, spoke about the game show role, saying he was drawn to it because of the excitement and life-changing amount of money on offer.

‘I always thought I wanted to do one, and thought I’d be quite good at that, but it’s just getting the opportunity I suppose, so I’m grateful to have the opportunity with a game that fits my personality and a game that I’d love to play myself, it’s a great game,’ he told Metro.co.uk and other publications.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Channel 4 for comment.

    Moneybags is streaming on All4.
