Evelyn will find herself in danger in a new storyline (Picture: ITV)
Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) has had a huge year in Coronation Street, from the loss of beloved pet dog Cerberus to the arrival of estranged daughter Cassie (Claire Sweeney).
But there is still plenty more to come for the popular character as show boss Iain MacLeod revealed.
‘We basically thought well, what do the viewers love, and essentially, we whittled the list down to they love Evelyn and they love dogs, because who doesn’t love dogs?’ He explained.
‘And we thought let’s do a story about that. It ends up actually in quite serious territory. But to start with, Evelyn makes herself a bit of an enemy in the shape of a fella that she sees mistreating his dog.
‘It goes from there to a situation that ends up with court appearances and trips to the hospital and really quite serious danger for both Evelyn and Cassie.’

Iain revealed that they had several reasons for doing this storyline, one being to showcase the talents of actress Maureen Lipman.
‘We thought it’s an opportunity to do a couple of things really. Number one, see Maureen being strident and brilliant and kicking behinds and taking names.’
He also added that it would give the show the opportunity to explore the strained relationship between Evelyn and Cassie, who have struggled to bond since Cassie returned to Evelyn’s life.

‘It’s an opportunity to explore their dynamic because they find themselves on the same team for the most part in this story.
‘Cassie as is her preference takes things too far, which causes some serious strife for Evelyn. So that the threatens to set their relationship back again. But by the end of it all, they’ve achieved a new kind of level of equilibrium and new understanding of each other, and to some extent, got to know each other as grownups for the first time.’

Iain went on to praise the chemistry between Maureen and Claire, revealing how much he has enjoyed the dynamic between Evelyn and Cassie.
‘I have to say Evelyn and Cassie, right from that first scene they gave us in a hospital, I’ve just found them utterly riveting. And there’s so much hinterland there that we’ve yet to explore, and I find that incredibly exciting.
‘Claire’s just been an absolute revelation in that art and her and Maureen have this chemistry that you know… When you cast someone, you sort of think you understand what you’re going to get from scenes, but sometimes it just surpasses everything you thought. And I just feel that every time I see those two in frame together, so I’m really excited about that story.’
