Colton Herta Joins F2 Feeder Series in Bid to Prove F1 Credentials

American driver Colton Herta is set to take a significant step towards his Formula 1 aspirations by racing in the feeder series Formula 2 in 2026. The multiple IndyCar race winner, who is already signed on as Cadillac’s test driver, aims to gain essential experience and skills in preparation for a future spot on the prestigious F1 grid.

    Aiming for Formula 1 Glory

Herta, 25, will compete with the Hitech team next season, marking a rare move for a driver of his experience. However, the decision underscores his commitment to enhancing his qualifications for Formula 1. “I’m incredibly excited to officially be joining F2 for the 2026 Formula 2 season,” Herta expressed. “This is an amazing opportunity to develop my skills in European racing and to measure myself against some of the best young drivers in the world.”

    The Importance of Formula 2

Formula 2 features cars that closely align with Formula 1 specifications and races on the same tracks, making it an ideal platform for Herta. The series uses Pirelli tyres with similar characteristics to F1, allowing drivers to gain invaluable experience that translates directly to the pinnacle of motorsport. Herta will compete alongside some of the most talented young drivers globally, a competitive environment that will further sharpen his skills.

    Overcoming Superlicence Challenges

Herta’s journey to F1 has encountered hurdles, notably the FIA superlicence point system. Currently, he holds 35 points, falling short of the 40 required for a race seat. However, a strong finish in the championship could change his eligibility, with an eighth-place finish automatically granting him the necessary points. Additionally, he may gain points by participating in practice sessions for Cadillac next season.

    Collaborative Role with Cadillac

In 2026, Herta will simultaneously serve as a test driver for the Cadillac Formula 1 team, enhancing his understanding of team dynamics and engineering processes. This dual role allows him to contribute significantly to Cadillac’s development strategy while advancing his personal goals within the sport. The approach promises seamless integration with the team’s engineering and race operations, ensuring that every weekend in F2 is geared towards Herta’s long-term growth in Formula 1.

    Looking Ahead

With his ambitious plans set in motion, Colton Herta is positioning himself as a contender for a coveted place in Formula 1. His proactive steps in joining Formula 2 signal a determined pathway towards achieving his racing dreams, buoyed by the trust and support of his team as he navigates this crucial phase of his career. The motorsport community will be watching closely as Herta embarks on this exciting new chapter.
