Sunday papers – ‘Climate crisis warning’, and ‘Cut travel tests costs to save summer’

The Sunday papers lead with the climate crisis and pleas to cut travel test costs to save summer, the papers cover the relationship between prime minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak after reports the PM plans to demote the chancellor at the next cabinet reshuffle.

The papers also cover Team GB’s Olympic success and TV presenter Ant McParlin’s wedding.

The Observer – ‘We’re on the brink of climate catastrophe’

The Observer’s front splash reports on the climate crisis. Alok Sharma, who is in charge of the Cop26 climate conference that the UK is hosting later this year, has warned that the world will soon face catastrophe if urgent action is not taken.

Mr Sharma told the Observer that we’re already seeing what’s happening across the world. But the paper says he defended the UK’s plan to carry on with fossil fuel projects, and also defended himself for his recent trips abroad for meetings.

The papers front page features a picture of Team GB’s Galal Yafai – who won boxing gold at the Olympics.

The Sunday Times – ‘Universities refuse to end online lessons’

The Times mentions the relationship between the PM and Rishi Sunak, reporting the PM threatened to demote the Chancellor in the next cabinet reshuffle “as tempers flared at the top of government.”

But the paper’s main story reports many top universities are refusing to bring back full face-to-face teaching in the autumn, despite there being no Covid rules in place. Many classes will still be online and some institutions are requiring masks and social distancing.

The Sunday Telegraph – ‘PM’s push for net zero plunged into chaos’

The Sunday Telegraph also leads with a report on climate change – specifically the financial impact of Boris Johnson’s plans to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The paper says a review by the Treasury into the costs of the plan had been due to be published in the spring, but it has reportedly been delayed because its findings shows poorest households will be hit the hardest. It comes amid claims of rising tensions between Mr Johnson and his chancellor, the paper adds.

The paper’s front splash features a picture of Princess Charlotte holding a butterfly at the annual Big Butterfly Count conservation project.

The Sunday Express – ‘Cut costs of tests to save the summer’

The Sunday Express reports on the latest with summer travel, as PM Boris Johnson is urged to cut the cost of Covid tests for travel by scrapping VAT on them. Travel bosses and politicians say the expensive tests are preventing many Britons from booking holidays and hindering the sector’s recovery.

The paper also reports on the Olympics, “sporting stars put great into Britain again” says the Sunday Express. The paper also features a picture of TV presenter Ant McParlin on his wedding day.

The Sunday Mirror – ‘Now Raab avoids travel rules’

The Sunday Mirror front page leads with criticism for the Foreign Secretary Dominic Rabb for not quarantining after returning from France, which at the time was on the amber plus list meaning self-isolation is necessary even for fully jabbed people. The paper says he met Princess Anne just two days after arriving back.

There is an exemption for government ministers to avoid quarantine when returning from abroad. The government defended him, saying: “He’s the foreign secretary. It’s his job to represent the UK abroad.”
