China: At least two dead, dozens missing in Yunnan landslide

A deadly landslide in China’s Yunnan province has left two dead and dozens missing.

The incident in Zhaotong City occurred early Monday, trapping 47 people.

President Xi Jinping has called for an “all-out” rescue effort in the sub-zero temperatures.

Two bodies have been recovered from the rubble, and rescuers are navigating the debris in snowy conditions.

The cause of the landslide is unclear, but the mountainous region is prone to such incidents, with floods also common.

Over 500 people were evacuated, and the area is expecting more snow in the coming days.

A resident of Liangshui village told Jimu News that the landslide happened while they were sleeping.

“It was very loud, and there was also a shake, it felt like a big earthquake,” the woman said.
