Middlesbrough icon Fabrizio Ravanelli is backing his former club to cause an upset on Tuesday night and knock Chelsea out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage.

The Championship side have put themselves in a good position to do just that after winning the first leg 1-0 at home, but now face the challenge of going to Stamford Bridge to complete the job.

Michael Carrick’s side are 11th in the Championship and could only manage a draw against Rotherham on Saturday, but Ravanelli fancies their chances in west London.

The 55-year-old only spent one year with Boro after his shock move from Juventus in 1996, but it wa sa memorable one as he scored 32 goals for the club in 50 appearances.

He still follows their fortunes and reckons they will down the Premier League outfit over two legs.

‘I think we have a big chance because Middlesbrough at this moment have confidence. They have a possibility to make history and get back into the final,’ Ravanelli told Bitcoin Casino.

‘We know it is very hard to go to Chelsea and get to the final, but in football everything is possible.

‘Chelsea are a fantastic team, but have many, many problems especially when the team needs to win the game because the defence has a lot of problems.

‘I see the games on Italian television and Chelsea have a lot of problems with their defence. If Middlesbrough defends well, on the counter-attack they can score.

‘A 1-1 draw to put Middlesbrough into the final – definitely. Me and my family will sit on the sofa on Tuesday night and watch the game in our Boro shirts to push the team into the final because it is on Italian television. This is 100 percent certain.

‘I want to support them at home as they try to create more history and make it to the final. This time they will win against Chelsea to go to the final. This will be great for the fans and also the chairman because Steve Gibson has sacrificed a lot for this team. He is fantastic.’

The Italian has not realised much success in management since his playing days ended in 2005, with short spells at Ajaccio and Arsenal Kyiv, but he says he would love to return to Middlesbrough one day in any capacity.

‘I love Middlesbrough,’ he said. ‘It is my dream to one day come back and finish my job. My job is not finished there. After the relegation, I want to come back one day. I don’t know if it’s manager, ambassador, or if it is responsibility with the young boys/academy but I want one day to come back to a job in Middlesbrough. This is my dream.

‘If one day arrives where I get that one call from Steve Gibson, I think it is my dream. If he says ‘Fabrizio, come in to help me, for the team, for the club, for the organisation, about marketing.’ I don’t know but I am ready to help the chairman.’
