Chaos in the Commons: Who is Sir Lindsay Hoyle and why is he facing calls to resign?
Speaker of the house Sir Lindsay Hoyle is facing calls to resign after a Commons vote on a ceasefire in Gaza descended into chaos last night.
54 MP’s have submitted a vote of no confidence in the speaker after he broke with convention to wave through a Labour amendment to the SNP’s motion calling for an ‘immediate humanitarian ceasefire’, which later passed without a formal vote.
The speaker apologised to Parliament after Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt claimed Sir Lindsay had ‘hijacked’ the debate and ‘undermined the confidence’ of the House, prompting Tory and SNP MP’s to stage a walk-out in disgust.
