When you step out of the shower, and wrap yourself in a fluffy towel, you’re no longer just getting dry, oh no, you’re making a fashion statement.
That’s according to Balenciaga, who have debuted their ‘towel skirt’ as part of the Spring 2024 collection.
For a staggering $925 – around £740 – you could preorder the unisex skirt from Kim Kardashian’s favourite fashion house, which looks uncannily like your standard beige bath towel.
Naturally, the internet has gone wild over this somewhat bizarre item.
‘A towel skirt? I think Balenciaga is a social experiment to test how dumb we are’, one joker wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Everyone’s favourite Swedish superstore, Ikea, even post a hilarious response on its socials, jumping on the opportunity for a clever marketing campaign featuring its own rival towel skirt.

The IKEA will only set you back £16, though. It’s a no-brainer, fashionistas.
And period tracking app, Clue, took to their social media to say the towel skirt could come in handy in unexpected ways.
Elsewhere on TikTok, creators have shown that you don’t need a Kim K budget to rock wear Balenciaga (or at least look you are). Many have made their own homemade versions out of, you guessed it, towels.
Creator @megankatemcg shared a video of her wearing a standard white bath towel, with the caption: ‘POV: Housekeeping just delivered your fresh Balenciaga skirt.’
TikToker @serenitycreators posted her own video styling the look. ‘No matter the budget, pop that towel and show them how versatile your shower look can be,’ she captioned it.

As she wraps the towel around her waist she says: ‘Boom, baby. The pièce de résistance, the towel of your dreams, making it easy for you to look and feel like a Hollywood star.’
Yes, it might seem strange, but we live in a world where a pair of big red clown boots sold out. You could be stepping out in your towel before you know it…
