Nancy Kassebaum Baker, the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate without a spouse’s influence, has died at the age of 94. Elected in 1978, Kassebaum Baker served three terms and was noted for her independent approach and willingness to engage with constituents, even on contentious issues.

The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in the devastated Gaza Strip. One hundred and fifty-eight members voted in favour of the resolution, nine voted against, with 13 abstentions.

US President-elect Donald Trump defended his choice of Charles Kushner for US ambassador to France, describing him as a “family member” and a “very successful man” in an interview released on Wednesday, December 11.
