Pakistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, is a country in South Asia. It is the world’s fifth-most populous country with a population exceeding 212.2 million. It is the 33rd-largest country by area. Its capital is Islamabad and its currency is Pakistani rupee.

Thousands marched to Islamabad Tuesday, demanding ex-PM Imran Khan’s release, defying tear gas and roadblocks. Clashes left one officer dead and nine critically injured. Khan, barred from February elections amid rigging allegations, faces multiple legal cases he claims are politically motivated to block his return to power. The government said one police officer had been killed and nine were critically wounded in two days of clashes with demonstrators as they closed in on Islamabad.

Heavy rains have battered Pakistan’s southwest, with flash floods and lightning killing at least 39 people. Some of those killed were farmers struck by lightning while harvesting wheat, authorities say. Flash floods have also disrupted power supplies and transportation networks.

Pakistan’s second and third political groups have agreed to collaborate following elections where imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s backers secured the lead.

The PMLN led by ex-PM Nawaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s PPP released a statement announcing their intention to work together to establish political stability.

If they succeed in forming a government, it’s likely to provoke anger among Khan’s supporters.

Khan’s PTI party was disqualified from participating in the election, leading many of its candidates to run as independents.

Earlier, police dispersed a crowd of Khan’s supporters in Rawalpindi using tear gas.

Votes are currently being counted following yesterday’s general election in Pakistan, which was marred by the suspension of mobile phone and internet services and violent unrest. Many analysts consider this to be among Pakistan’s least credible elections, and the release of results has been notably sluggish compared to previous votes.
