Caroline Flack’s case to be reinvestigated by Met Police – ‘I just want the truth out there’
Cops have been told to reinvestigate Caroline Flack’s mother’s complaint that her daughter had been treated differently – due to being famous.
The British TV presenter Caroline was facing prosecution when she died and her mum Christine says she is still “sad and very angry” over the way Caroline, 40 was treated.
Watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has now instructed the Metropolitan Police to reinvestigate that aspect of Christine’s complaint, a force spokesman told the BBC.
Flack died in February 2020. It was ruled she had ended her own life just one day after learning she would face prosecution over an assault charge following an incident with her boyfriend Lewis Barton.
Christine wants to know why her daughter was charged when she had originally been told she would only be given a caution.
Christine told the BBC: “I just want those answers to make me feel better and to make me know that I’ve done the right thing by Caroline.”
She added: “It leaves us really sad and really angry because we want to know why they charged her.
“I just want the truth out there. I know it won’t bring her back but I’ve got to do it for her.”
Mum Christine first complained to the Met just a month after Caroline’s death and now the police watchdog has recommended the force re-investigate whether Caroline would have been treated differently if she had not been famous.
A Met spokesperson said: “Following a review, the IOPC agreed with the MPS that service was acceptable in relation to seven areas of the complaints relating to the response and handling of the incident by the MPS.
“The IOPC has directed the MPS to reinvestigate one element of the complaints.
“This relates to the process involved in appealing the CPS decision to caution Ms Flack.
“We will re-examine this element of the investigative process. Our thoughts and sympathies remain with Caroline’s family.”
