Diablo 4 is not beyond criticism (pic: Blizzard)
A Bungie employee’s scathing tweet about Diablo 4’s enemy scaling reached Blizzard’s President’s ears, and he certainly wasn’t happy about it.
Despite launching a few weeks ago, Diablo 4 has already garnered widespread acclaim, receiving positive reviews and praise from players.
While the game introduced numerous new features, such as an expansive open world and improved mechanics, it hasn’t been without its detractors.
One of the dissenters was Bungie’s Chad Jessup, who took to Twitter to unleash his frustration, branding Diablo 4’s enemy scaling as ‘one of the worst ideas.’
While Jessup singled out Diablo 4 to make his point, he was talking about enemy scaling in video games overall, slamming the system as ‘lazy’ and claiming that it ‘ruins player power trips.’
Scaling refers to the game’s difficulty ramping up as your character grows stronger. Rather than you becoming increasingly more powerful than enemies, they increase in toughness at the same time as you level up.
Blizzard President Mike Ybarra was quick to spot Jessup’s tweet and he definitely didn’t seem too thrilled about it. His response was short and to the point, with just a simple ‘Lazy, huh?’ thrown back at Jessup.

In a subsequent tweet, Jessup made an effort to clarify his initial post, stating that his intention was misunderstood and that he never meant to imply that Diablo 4 is ‘bad, difficult, or lazy.’
Quoting that tweet, then Jessup admitted that his wording could have been better, and he deleted the original tweet shortly after.
He also tweeted that he was not ‘knocking on the devs’ – being one himself – and that he actually considers Diablo 4 ‘a stellar game,’ as reported by PCGamesN.
After receiving a barrage of criticism from Diablo 4 players, Jessup decided to switch his Twitter account to private.
However, there were plenty of others who agreed with his take on enemy scaling, although that doesn’t seem to have stopped anyone from playing it anyway.
