If there was ever a Christmas hero, it has to be A Christmas Carol’s Bob Cratchit.
The working class hero slaved away for just 15 shillings a week, at the mercy of his Christmas-hating boss Ebeneezer Scrooge.
And while we’re all aware just how hard Bob Cratchit worked for his family, did anyone ever consider how long it took him to get to his job in the first place?
A study from 2022 found that the Londoners have the longest commute times in the country, with the average Londoner spending 80 minutes per day travelling to and from work, via car or public transport.
But your lengthy commute is nothin compared to dear old Bob Cratchit who, it turns out, spent double that getting to and from his home in Camden Town to his dreary job at Ebenezer Scrooge’s counting house in Cornhill.
The walk takes 3.4 miles each way, and goes from Camden, past the British Library and then the British Museum, through Holborn, past St Paul’s Cathedral and into Cornhill.
All in all, it’s 160 minutes of walking every single day, and that’s without mentioning the snowy pavements and worn shoes.
Nathaniel Metcalf shared the route to X, formerly Twitter, and of course, the internet had some hilarious reactions.
‘Don’t know how he dare plead poverty when he can afford a house big enough for 7 in fancy Camden Town,’ wrote user Big Yan.
While Ed Arbery wrote: ‘No wonder Scrooge is as so hard in him, how could he trust a member of staff to properly run his books when he is so slipshod inefficient in his route planning?’
Others thought they could put a modern day twist on Bob’s route. ‘This looks suspiciously like a suggestion for a festive pub crawl route,’ wrote Peter McGla.
So next time you’re sat on your 20 minute tube journey thinking of all the things you’d like to say to the person breathing too loudly, or the kid two rows away playing TikToks out loud, spare a thought for old Bob Cratchit.
