Media Coverage
The story is the lead for much of the tabloid media whilst the broadsheets also find space for the news on their front pages.
The reaction to the report is that of anger as many feel that the NHS have failed by allowing Calocane to be free despite warnings of how dangerous he could be – and missed chances to lock him up.
Trending – ‘Blood on their hands’ report lays bare failings that left Calocane free to kill
A report laying bare the failures of the system that allowed Valdo Calocane, the Nottingham killer, to roam free has been published and the newspapers have reacted to the findings.
A doctor had warned, three years prior to Calocane killing three people in Nottingham in 2023, that he was capable of murder.
The doctor’s warning was just one in a “litany of missed chances to intervene” before he carried out the fatal attack in June of last year.
The reaction?
Outrage is expressed across media news sites with many assessing the failures of the NHS staff that failed to keep Calocane locked up. There is also coverage of the families’ reaction to the report with many who have spoken expressing their anger at the failings and have called for a public inquiry.
What are the facts?
In the early morning of 13 June 2023, three people were fatally stabbed and three others were injured when a van was driven into them in three connected attacks in Nottingham, UK. At around 04:00 BST, Valdo Calocane fatally stabbed two university students in the street followed by a school caretaker whose van he stole. After driving the van into people at a nearby bus stop, Calocane was arrested.
On 16 June 2023, Calocane was charged with three counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder and on 17 June he was remanded in custody. In November 2023, Calocane denied the three counts of murder, but admitted three counts of manslaughter, on the basis of diminished responsibility, and three further counts of attempted murder. His pleas were accepted by the prosecution. On 25 January 2024, Calocane was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to be detained indefinitely at a high-security hospital.
Barnay Webber and his friend Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, were the first two people killed in the attacks. The University students were stabbed to death on their way home. The third victim was Ian Coates, 65, who was the owner of the van, which had been stolen from him on his way to work as a school caretaker.

How social media is reacting
Full of admiration for the Calocane family going on #bbcPanorama . Sadly familiar story. Inpatient MH beds been decimated so desperately ill ppl like Valdo are sent home still psychotic and when they disengage with svcs are discharged from CMHT often with tragic results as here.

I dare anyone to watch the #Panorama programme about Valdo Calocane and explain why we don’t need better services with staff properly qualified to assess and treat psychosis

Distressing, but necessary @BBCPanorama tonight. The Nottingham killings were preventable, but enabled by an utterly broken mental health service, all too ready to discharge seriously ill patients. My heart breaks for Valdo Calocane’s family, as it did for his victims. #Panorama

Tory-led austerity governments have axed a quarter of all mental health beds since 2010. The medics that treated Valdo Calocane are not to blame for that.

With a 'series of errors and misjudgements' in Nottingham killer Valdo Calocane's mental healthcare leading to his discharge, @mrjamesob wonders 'why warnings are going unheeded'. pic.twitter.com/MAY1OrAT2c
