Billions star Dan Soder has accidently let slip that the show’s upcoming seventh season will be its last.

The drama series first started by telling the story of hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis), as he accumulated wealth and power in the world of high finance, but his aggressive tactics to secure high returns frequently blurred lines and became illegal, sparking the interest of United States Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti).

First hitting screens in 2016, it has been critically acclaimed, and was also credited with being the first American series to have a non-binary character (Asia Kate Dillon’s Taylor Mason).

After leaving the series in season 5, it was confirmed last month that Damian would be returning to the seventh season, which is currently in production, however it now appears this will also be the final season of the show.

During an appearance on NBC Sports Chicago’s Football Night, Dan, who plays Dudley Mafee revealed that it was wrapping up, but quickly realised his mistake.

‘Season seven, the final season of Billions, is on its way,’ he said.

‘Am I not supposed to say that? I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that. I think so. It’s fine,’ he added, as reported by Deadline.

The series began by following Bobby (Damian Lewis) and Chuck (Paul Giamatti) (Picture: Showtime)

When questioned further by presenter Mike Berman, who said ‘it doesn’t matter, you just said it’, Dan doubled down and responded: ‘It’s the final season.’

While nothing else has been confirmed by the show’s creators or any of the other actors, a synopsis for the upcoming season has teased what is in store.

‘In season seven, alliances are turned on their heads. Old wounds are weaponized. Loyalties are tested,’ it shared.

‘Betrayal takes on epic proportions. Enemies become wary friends. And Bobby Axelrod returns, as the stakes grow from Wall Street to the world.’

While Showtime, the network that airs the series in the US, has not yet commented on the apparent slip-up, it did recently reveal several Billions spinoffs were currently in the works.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, one will tracks the Miami cryptocurrency scene, one called Millions will be about young and ambitious finance workers, and another is called Trillions, which will be a ‘soapier’ drama about the ultra, ultra-rich.

Last month Damian’s return was officially confirmed after he was spotted filming outside the Tower of London in November 2022.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Sky for comment.

Billions airs on Showtime in the US and is available to stream on NOW in the UK.
