Biden opposes Israeli strikes on Iran nuclear sites
U.S. President Joe Biden has stated that he does not support an Israeli retaliatory strike on Iranian nuclear sites following Iran’s missile attack on Israel. Iran launched around 180 missiles at Israel on Tuesday, though Israel’s defence system intercepted most.
The missile barrage from Iran was in response to Israel’s recent attacks on Lebanon, including exploding communication devices that killed innocent civilians. The recent killings of key figures such as the Hezbollah leader and the ground invasion of Lebanon are believed to have formed Iran’s response.
Biden acknowledged Israel’s right to defend itself – though he does not extend this right to Lebanon – he emphasised that any response should be proportional.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to North Carolina, Biden confirmed the U.S. would continue discussions with Israel on how to proceed. He also mentioned that other G7 leaders believe that Israel should act with restraint.
He says the U.S. continues to push for de-escalation and is involved in ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, though no resolution has been reached so far.
