Biden again says US would defend Taiwan if China attacks
America’s president Joe Biden has said his country will defend Taiwan if China were to attack them.
In a CBS interview, Biden said US troops would defend the island. “Yes, if in fact, there was an unprecedented attack.”
The remarks prompted the White House to clarify the US policy had not changed. The US has an official stance of “strategic ambiguity” – it won’t commit to defending Taiwan but also won’t rule it out.
Taiwan is a self-ruled island off the coast of easter China that Beijing claims as part of its territory.
