Starfield should be getting a major expansion every six weeks from the start of next year, as Bethesda tease its first paid-for DLC.
No matter what you think of Starfield, the one thing everyone agrees on is that it will almost certainly get better over time, once fans are able to easily add their own mods to the game.
That’s still a way off but Bethesda has started talking about their plans for the game in the new year, including a regular series of free updates and the paid-for expansion Shattered Space.
The first free update will launch in February and then roughly every six weeks after that, with each one including new content, feature updates, quality-of-life improvements, and bug fixes.
Bethesda has already teased ‘new ways to travel‘ but it’s still not clear whether that means ground vehicles, spaceships, or something else entirely.
Already confirmed features are city maps and expanded ship customisation, that includes interior decorations. There’ll also be more granular difficulty settings that let you change how many objects you can carry, ship damage, the amount of money you carry, and so on.
Official mod support still doesn’t have a date but Bethesda claim that from ‘early next year’ there’ll be a new exporter and Creation Kit, which should make mods possible.
As for Shattered Space, there are no specific details, but it will have new story content, new locations, new gear, and ‘much more’.

In the blog announcing the news, Bethesda claims that 13 million people have played the game since September, confirming it as the biggest launch in their history. However, there’s no figure for how many copies were sold, as that total includes Game Pass use.
It’s also claimed that the average playtime for players is 40 hours, which seems very high and probably implies that some people have been playing it for hundreds of hours, to compensate for those that have only put in a few.
Bethesda will no doubt be bearing in mind games like Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man’s Sky, which had far more disastrous launches than Starfield but after years of updates still went on to be acclaimed as modern classics.
