European Leaders Criticize Trump’s Greenland Ambitions at World Economic Forum
The Belgian prime minister has told the World Economic Forum that “enough is enough,” urging Europe to stand against “hungry caterpillar” Donald Trump.
A Call to Action Against Trump’s Threats
Bart de Wever made these remarks, comparing the US president to the character from the beloved children’s book after Trump suggested the world would soon “find out” how far he’d go regarding Greenland. De Wever expressed his views during a panel discussion on the future of European security in Davos: “My feeling is that the sweet-talking is over. You reach the point where sweet-talking is counterproductive. It only encourages them to go a step further – it’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”

Europe Must Arm Itself
De Wever argued that Europe must prepare to combat the growing threat of US military intervention in Greenland. He declared, “We have to wake up, we have to rearm, we have to integrate our market, and we have to seek new alliances.” He criticized European nations for what he deemed their subservience to President Trump, stating, “He can make us slaves, and we are slaves then.”
Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen echoed these sentiments, warning that any attempt to seize Greenland would spell the end of the historic military alliance.
Trump Ramps Up Threats on Social Media
Trump has escalated threats regarding Greenland on his Truth Social platform, where he posted an AI-generated image of himself planting an American flag on the island.

Trump is expected to arrive in Davos later today, and his ambitions for Greenland are likely to be high on the agenda for European leaders.
European Leaders Unite Against Trump
French President Macron has already joined De Wever in criticizing “bully” Trump at Davos, advocating for a European commitment to the rule of law. Additionally, Polish PM Donald Tusk and Canadian leader Mark Carney have voiced their concerns.
Trump told reporters outside the White House this morning that it will be an interesting and successful trip to Davos but admitted that he has “no idea what’s going to happen.”
