Bayern Munich players ‘looked embarrassed’ after late Celtic draw in Champions League

Football pundit Troy Deeney says Bayern Munich’s players ‘looked embarrassed’ after their 1-1 Champions League draw against Celtic.

Bayern required a dramatic 94th-minute equaliser from Alphonso Davies at home to reach the last 16 on Tuesday, having won the play-off first leg 2-1 to secure a 3-2 victory on aggregate.

It was Celtic who took the lead in the second-leg clash at the Allianz Arena with Nicolas-Gerrit Kühn firing the Scottish champions ahead in Germany.

But Celtic’s Champions League elimination was confirmed by Davies’ late goal, following an impressive performance from Brendan Rodgers’ side.

With the Bundesliga giants only progressing through the skin of their teeth in a cruel result for Celtic, Deeney, watching the match for talkSPORT, said: ‘Looking down at the Bayern Munich players, they look embarrassed.

‘They are standing in front of their fans and they obviously do a little jump and a celebration with their fanbase, they look embarrassed to even be there at this moment in time.

‘That just puts into perspective how well this Celtic team have done. [It’s an] absolute sickener. I feel so sorry for every one of those Celtic players, staff, fanbase that’s travelled, fanbase that’s listening and watching the game.

Celtic’s Champions League elimination was an ‘absolute sickener’

‘Bayern Munich celebrating as much as they did shows you just how much Celtic had them on the ropes. Genuinely a sickener.

‘The best players on the day were all from Celtic. Two or three players from Bayern Munich can hold their heads high. The rest of them, just not at the races.

‘[Bayern Munich head coach] Vincent Kompany is celebrating because he knows they got away with one tonight.

‘This Bayern Munich team need to step up. They play like that, they are out in the next round.’

Former Liverpool boss Rodgers was left proud of his Celtic side despite their Champions League exit, having firmly pushed Bayern all the way.

‘Our European credibility has been restored this season, built up from last year,’ Rodgers said. ‘That’s my takeaway from this season.

‘We’ve shown real quality at times. It wasn’t what the players deserved, especially right at the very end.

‘They gave so much to the game, played with confidence with the ball. We knew we would have to defend but we didn’t give away too much in the game.

‘We’ve found a nice template when we don’t have the ball to have that security.

‘Hopefully come next season we can improve the squad even more. At this level to be able to bring quality off the bench and have that freshness is the next step.

‘This season has been so good, we’ve played some amazing football and my objective is to make us a seasoned team at this level.

‘I said to the players in the dressing room that I came back to make progress in Europe, and if I judge that myself tonight, they have given me everything and we have to learn from that and get back in next season.’

    Champions League last-16 draw

Bayern, six-time champions of Europe, will discover their last-16 opponents on Friday when the draw is made.

Celtic, meanwhile, will now turn their attentions back to domestic duties as they look to clinch both the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup.
