Forza Azzurri, Italy win euro 2020 after beating England in a penalty shoot-out as violence at Wembley overshadows an excellent tournament. England lost a nerve-shredding shootout 3-2 to Italy in Euro 2020 final, in a penalty shootout that ebbed and flowed from one side to the next.

England’s bid to end their 55-year wait for a major trophy ended in the familiar agony, losing in a penalty shootout as Italy claimed the Euro 2020 crown at a packed Wembley stadium.

On a night of anticipation, tension and ultimate heartbreak in an unbelievable atmosphere, England looked on course for their most joyous day since 30 July 1966 when Luke Shaw gave them the perfect start after two minutes. But the Azzurri came back with a second-half equaliser. In the 67th minute when Leonardo Bonucci pounced after England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford turned Marco Verratti’s header onto a post.

Heartbreaking. Congratulations @Azzurri on a great victory.
@England, you’ve all come so far, but sadly this time it wasn’t our day. You can all hold your heads high, and be so proud of yourselves — I know there’s more to come. W

Roberto Mancini was is in tears. What a victory this is for him personally. He has rebuilt Italy from one that failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup finals into the European champions.

Ecstacy for the azzuri – Italy win euro 2020

England missed three of their five penalties, Marcus Rashford hitting a post and Gianluigi Donnarumma denying Jordan Sancho before – so cruelly for such a fine young player – Arsenal teenager Bukayo Saka also saw the giant Italy goalkeeper save his spot-kick. That presented the Italians with victory even after missing two of their won penalties.

The team of the 2020 Euro championship played together like a team without Ego or standout star players. They worked and covered miles on those pitches and were simply too hot to handle for everyone. Deserved champions.

The Italian team celebrate - champions once again Forza Azzurri A magical night for the Italian fans who made it to Wembley for the final - Even though violence at Wembley after the game overshadows a great tournament

    Disappointment for England

The effort of this England team was immense, we felt it so dear to our hearts and we wanted them to get over the line. Finals are won by moments. It can go any way. Penalties are so tough. It’s the nature of the game.

    Violence at Wembley stadium

At the final whistle, violence erupted when fans clashed with stewards and Italian supporters. English fans started attacking supporters from Italy as they tried to get out of the stadium.
