House speakership up in air as resistance to Jim Jordan hardens Republican Jim Jordan lost the first vote in his bid to become US House of Representatives Speaker after opposition from members of his own party. Despite intense lobbying, 20 Republicans refused to vote for the right-wing Ohio congressman. He abandoned plans for another vote until Wednesday morning. Congress’s lower chamber has had no Speaker since Kevin McCarthy was ousted two weeks ago. Without a leader, the House cannot pass any bills or approve White House requests for emergency aid. That includes potential help for Israel amid its war with…

England 3-1 Italy: Bellingham shines, as Kane and Rashford seal win England came back from a goal down to beat Italy 3-1 on Tuesday, securing their place at Euro 2024 in Germany with two games to spare. England remains unbeaten so far in qualifiers and has only lost one such game in 24 years. On paper, it was not an easy group for England. They were drawn with the defending Euro champions – Italy, as well as Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta. But with five wins, one draw and no losses so far, they have managed to qualify with two…
The best in the world? Jude Bellingham sparks debate after latest England masterclass The Independent says In the celebratory aftermath of England’s qualification for Euro 2024, Jude Bellingham was in little mood to qualify his opinion. The Real Madrid midfielder just went out and said how Gareth Southgate’s side deserved the win over Italy because they were the “much better” team. There was no diplomacy there, just a striking stridency. It created a very different mood to the last time a match between the two teams led to a tournament qualification, amid scenes that received a new prominence recently due…
Jude Bellingham, England’s perfect 10, can light the torch at Euro 2024 The Guardian says The “Bellingham burst” has a certain ring to it. With almost half an hour played Wembley had shown its first signs of descending into an unnervingly familiar tetchiness, a groundswell of dissatisfaction brewing as England’s defenders passed the ball in front of a static midfield. Italy had begun as if resigned to be bullied but now, a goal up and with palpable wind in their sails, they appeared to have Gareth Southgate’s players where they wanted them. This Azzurri side are a pale imitation of…

‘His mentality is incredible’: Southgate says England lucky to have Bellingham The Guardian says Gareth Southgate lavished praise on Jude Bellingham after England sealed qualification for the European Championship finals next summer with two games to spare by beating Italy at home for the first time since 1977. The former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca’s first international goal had given the reigning European champions a surprise lead inside the first 15 minutes on their first return to Wembley since beating England on penalties in the Euro 2020 final. But Harry Kane’s penalty after Bellingham was brought down in the box…
Kane and Rashford seal England spot at Euro 2024 with comeback win over Italy The Guardian says The jeopardy had long since ended in terms of whether England would qualify for the European Championship in Germany next summer. It was merely a question of when and where. The answer was here and there was a symbolism about who they beat to do it – the champions, Italy, who they intend to dethrone. Gareth Southgate had wanted a performance as much as a result; England only needed a draw – something to bolster the collective belief. The manager got it. There…
