Tesco and M&S report strong Christmas sales Retail giants Tesco and Marks & Spencer have both reported stronger-than-expected sales for the key Christmas trading season. Tesco said UK like-for-like sales – which strip out the impact of new stores – rose up 6.8% over the six weeks to 6 January. The supermarket giant also raised its profit forecast for the full year. M&S also reported robust demand for the festive period, especially in its food business. Sales rose 8.1% over the 13 weeks to 30 December.

US and UK hint at military action after largest Houthi attack in Red Sea The US and UK have hinted about using military action against the Houthi rebels in Yemen. This comes after the rebels attacked ships in the Red Sea, but the US and UK stopped 21 of their drones and missiles. The UN also said the attacks need to stop right away.  The Houthi rebels say they are targeting ships connected to Israel to protest against Israel’s actions in Gaza. Some countries voted for the UN resolution, but others like Russia and China didn’t vote.
