A new Alzheimer’s drug has been “blocked for use on NHS” and the BBC has sacked one of its presenters – these are the top stories on Friday’s front pages.

The papers react to news that the new drug will not be available on the NHS due to costs with most papers reacting with shock and outrage. The drug was deemed efficient at slowing Alzheimer’s disease.

News that the BBC has sacked presenter Jermaine Jenas after complaints were made over ‘inappropriate behaviour’ makes the front page of the tabloids – and a common sidebar article for the broadsheets.

Oil tanker crew rescued after attacks in Red Sea A Greek-owned oil tanker was attacked in the Red Sea on Wednesday. The ship, carrying 150,000 tonnes of crude oil, was hit by gunfire and projectiles, causing a fire and leaving it without power. All 25 crew members were successfully rescued by a European warship. Thailand confirms first Asian case of new Mpox strain Bangkok, Thailand – A 66-year-old European man has become the first confirmed case of the potentially deadlier Clade 1b strain of Mpox in Asia. The man arrived in Bangkok from an unnamed African country on August 14 and began experiencing symptoms the following day. This marks the second case of Clade 1b outside of Africa, following a similar case reported in Sweden a week earlier. Joe Biden tells Netanyahu Gaza ceasefire deal is urgent Washington, USA – In a call with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden stressed the “urgency” of reaching a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal.  The White House said Vice President Kamala Harris joined the call in which the President stated the importance of removing “any remaining obstacles” blocking an agreement with Hamas.
