Arrests made over suspected coup plot in Benin: State Prosecutor
Three men in Benin, including a former government minister and the head of President Patrice Talon’s security detail, have been arrested on suspicion of plotting a coup, according to the state prosecutor.
Among those detained is Oswald Homeky, the ex-sports minister, who was reportedly caught handing over six bags of cash to the head of the Republican Guard, Col. Elonm Mario Metonou. Investigators allege that the money was a bribe intended to ensure Col. Metonou would not resist a coup planned for Friday in the West African nation.
Also arrested is Col. Djimon Dieudonne Tevoedjre, who oversees President Talon’s security. Authorities claim he was involved in the plot to overthrow the government.
Another key figure taken into custody is businessman Olivier Boko, a close associate of President Talon who had recently expressed political ambitions. His lawyers and supporters have condemned the arrest, labelling it an “abduction” and demanding his immediate release.
The state prosecutor confirmed that investigations are ongoing to uncover additional suspects linked to the coup attempt.
Once regarded as a model of multi-party democracy in West Africa, Benin has faced criticism from rights groups in recent years for becoming increasingly autocratic under President Talon. Despite concerns, Talon has announced he will not seek a third term in the 2026 elections.
The arrest comes amid a troubling wave of military coups and attempted takeovers across West and Central Africa, with eight successful coups recorded since 2020.
