At least 12 people have died, according to French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin. Two people are missing and several are injured, he adds. Transgender athlete Valentina Petrillo failed in her bid to reach the final of the women’s T12 400m at the Paralympic Games in Paris. Petrillo qualified for Monday evening’s semi-final having finished second in her heat behind Venezuela’s Alejandra Paola Perez earlier that day. However, the Italian, who was diagnosed with Stargardt disease – a genetic eye condition – aged 14, failed to qualify for Tuesday’s final after she finished third in her semi-final despite running a personal-best time of 57.58 seconds. The 51-year-old again finished behind Perez, with Iran’s Hajar Safarzadeh Ghahderijani winning the semi-final in a time of 56.07s. Petrillo will compete…
The Olympics is broadcast on the BBC, meanwhile, the Paralympics are shown on Channel 4 and viewers have defended this split. The Paris 2024 games got underway on July 26, and after ending on August 11, they will re-commence today, before running until September 8. Sports fans will have to switch over channels to continue catching the coverage, as since 2012, Channel 4 has been airing the Paralympics. One Reddit user, who uses the account name MyUnsername, voiced their frustration that it wasn’t also shown on BBC, like the Olympics counterpart. ‘Does it bother anyone else that Olympics are on…
Marco van Basten has criticised Donny van de Beek’s agent for allowing the midfielder to join Manchester United. Van de Beek made the move to United in a £39 million deal from Ajax in September 2020 but the 27-year-old failed to make an impact during his time at Old Trafford. The Dutch midfielder also had spells on loan at Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt before United allowed him to join Spanish side Girona for an initial €500,000 (£423,000) fee this summer. ‘His manager was a bad advisor in that. That step was much too big,’ Van Basten said of Van de…
Rafael Nadal has become the latest name in tennis to share his thoughts on the Jannik Sinner doping scandal, after he failed a drugs test — but avoided punishment. Sinner twice tested positive for clostebol, a steroid that can be used to build muscle mass. But he was controversially cleared by a tribunal after they learned his physio applied spray to a cut on his hand before giving the player a bare-handed massage. This was said to have caused ‘contamination’. The Italian was automatically provisionally suspended, but his successful appeal allowed him to keep playing and move to the top…
It’s hardly all over bar the shouting but the job as England’s next permanent manager is surely Lee Carsley’s to lose. Success with the Three Lions at the European Under-21 Championship last year has led the Football Association to appoint him as interim boss for this month’s Nations League matches, starting with the trip to Dublin to play the Republic of Ireland on Saturday and followed by the visit of Finland to Wembley on Tuesday. The FA say Carsley was appointed ‘with a view to remaining in the position throughout the autumn’ and there are potentially four more internationals, two…
Manuel Ugarte insists he is ready to come straight into the Manchester United first-team following the international break and deliver a much-needed boost in midfield. The Uruguay international completed his move from Paris Saint-Germain last week in a deal that could rise to £50.8million, becoming the club’s fifth signing of a busy summer transfer window. The midfielder did not arrive in time to be registered in time for Sunday’s meeting with Liverpool, however, introduced to the Old Trafford crowd ahead of kick-off. United’s shortcomings in midfield were woefully exposed that afternoon with Casemiro enduring a disastrous first-half, at fault for…
British No.1 tennis star Jack Draper has reached the first major quarter-final of his career after booking a spot in the last eight at the 2024 US Open. Draper, seen by many as the heir to retired icon Andy Murray, has enjoyed a superb year on the ATP Tour, registering his maiden title in Stuttgart back in June. The 22-year-old has been surging up the rankings – passing the likes of Cameron Norrie – and entered Flushing Meadows as the 25th seed in the men’s singles. Draper recorded wins over Zhang Zhizhen, Facundo Diaz Acosta and Botic van de Zandschulp…
Naoya Inoue has defended his undisputed super-bantamweight titles with a stoppage victory over TJ Doheny, with an injury for the Irish fighter halting the contest in the seventh round. ‘The Monster’ extended his flawless record to 28-0 after victory in Koto-Ku, Japan on Tuesday afternoon. In another devastating display of power, the four-weight world champion sought to break down the experienced and savvy Doheny, landing vicious shots at will as he looked for the stoppage win. Doheny, 37, stood firm, however, landing shots of his own as he stuck to a clear game plan to take the fight the distance.…
Chelsea have made a £6 million profit after selling Angelo Gabriel to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr. The winger was signed by Chelsea in a £13m deal from Brazilian club Santos in July last year but was then sent out to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. Angelo ended up making 24 appearances for the French club and the Brazilian returned to Chelsea in the summer to begin pre-season training with Enzo Maresca’s side. However, Chelsea have now opted to sell Angelo on a permanent deal and have agreed a £19.1m fee with Al-Nassr, who finished second in the Saudi Pro League…
