For the past week, tens of thousands of Georgians have been protesting against the country’s newly elected Moscow-friendly government and there’s end in sight. DW takes a closer look at the situation. Every evening since November 28, 2024, has seen massive protests in Georgia. Citizens are enraged by the new government’s plan to pause EU accession talks. It hasn’t always been peaceful: protesters have pelted police with objects and shot fireworks at them; the police, in turn, have used tear gas and water cannons against protesters. While nationalist Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze of ruling party Georgian Dream accuses the opposition…
On 22 November, the Hindu community of Belgium celebrated the first legal step to the recognition of Hinduism by the Belgian Government and Parliament with their decision last year to grant a subsidy to the Hindu Forum Belgium, the official interlocutor of the Belgian State. This platform for all Vedic spiritual traditions will coordinate cooperation among various Hindu/Vedic communities and organisations in Belgium towards full recognition. “Recognition is more than just a legal formality or access to government benefits; it is a moral acknowledgment of the positive contributions that Hindu communities make to Belgian society,” said in his introduction to the event, Martin…

South Korea’s president accepted the resignation of his defence minister on Thursday as opposition parties moved to impeach both men over the stunning yet short-lived imposition of martial law that brought armed troops into Seoul streets. The main opposition Democratic Party and other small opposition parties submitted a joint motion to impeach president Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday over his martial law declaration the previous night. Martial law lasted about six hours, as the National Assembly quickly voted to overrule the president, forcing his cabinet to lift it before daybreak on Wednesday. On Thursday, Mr Yoon replaced defence minister Kim…
The UN’s cultural organization on Wednesday, December 4, added the skills of Parisian zinc roofers and ornamentalists to its list of intangible cultural heritage, calling the French capital a “living archive” of their work. Zinc roofers and ornamentalists — those who install and restore the decorations topping the city’s buildings – began honing their craft in the 19th century as the use of grey metal in construction exploded. The skills needed to install the zinc covering some 80 percent of the city’s iconic rooftops “shape the unique identity of its urban landscape,” said UNESCO. And now these craftsmen are adapting…
The French navy rescued 85 migrants trying to cross the Channel from France to England on Wednesday, December 4, maritime authorities said, the latest in a deadly series of dangerous crossings. One of “numerous” migrant boats that set out to sea called for help after hitting a sandbank off the Pas-de-Calais region, France’s Channel and North Sea maritime prefecture said in a statement. A navy tugboat saved 80 passengers from that boat and five more from a second migrant vessel at another location, it said. The migrants were brought back to land at Boulogne-sur-Mer and attended to by emergency services…
The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, despised this Wednesday the landing of Óscar López as general secretary of the PSOE of Madrid, replacing the resigned Juan Lobato. During a television interview, the conservative baroness ruled out that the minister would be a candidate in the 2027 regional elections, recalled his electoral defeat in the 2011 regional elections of Castilla y León, and accused him of being “an errand boy” for the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, with the mission, he has said, of doing the greatest possible damage to Madrid. This Thursday, López will present…

France is once again without a government: Michel Barnier fails as prime minister after just three months. The left-wing coalition’s no-confidence vote received crucial support from right-wing populists and conservative defectors. President Macron is coming under increasing pressure. Amnesty evaluated 15 Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip. And no evidence was found that they were directed against military targets. For human rights activists, this only allows one conclusion. In a new report, the human rights organization Amnesty International accuses Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. “Our research shows that the State of Israel has committed genocide for months and continues to do so,” said the Secretary General of Amnesty International in Germany, Julia Duchrow, on Thursday. This was done “in the full knowledge” that the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip “have been inflicted irreparable harm.” The…
