Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg is due to be sentenced after he admitted abusing his estranged wife over the course of five years. He previously pleaded guilty to a single charge of domestic abuse of his ex-partner, Gillian Hogg, when he appeared at Selkirk Sheriff Court on November 4. He admitted shouting and swearing, tracking her movements and sending her messages which were alarming and distressing in nature. The court previously heard he berated Mrs Hogg for “not being fun” after going on drinking binges with his colleagues, and once sent more than 200 text messages to her in…
Bitcoin has topped 100,000 dollars (£78,701) for the first time as a massive rally rolls on, only hours after US President-elect Donald Trump picked crypto advocate Paul Atkins to lead the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Mr Trump said Mr Atkins, the chief executive of Patomak Partners and a former SEC commissioner, was a “proven leader for common sense regulations”. In the years since leaving the SEC, Mr Atkins has made the case against too much market regulation. Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social: “He believes in the promise of robust, innovative capital markets that are responsive to the…
Three months after he was appointed prime minister by French President Emmanuel Macron, Michel Barnier and his government were toppled on Wednesday, December 4, after a majority of PMs voted a no-confidence motion. The Assemblée Nationale debated two motions of no confidence, one presented by the radical left and the other by the far right, in a standoff over next year’s austerity budget, after the prime minister on Monday forced a social security financing bill through without a vote. As a special privilege, Emmanuel Macron was given a preview of the cathedral ahead of its reopening on Friday, November 29, and shared this moment with over a thousand lucky visitors. According to the Élysée, they were the people “most involved,” a term used to describe both the workers and restorers who brought the cathedral back to life, as well as the most generous donors who financed the project. She is a tiny woman, but she alone explains an entire neighborhood to you. There is a woman in La Latina who, once a week, goes out to scrub the piece of sidewalk in front of her doorway. Theirs is a virtually infinite task, since scrubbing the street is the urban version of putting up doors to the countryside. Once you start on the first cobblestone it is difficult to find the last one. Where do you stop? When you reach the zebra crossing? When the sidewalk ends at the first vacant lot? On the sign that tells you that…
The Catalan Police avoids pointing out in its report to the CNI that Sánchez was beheaded at the request of ERC. The Mossos d’Esquadra have declared themselves unable to find out who spied on the pro-independence leaders with the Pegasus program. The Catalan police force admits this in the file resulting from the analysis of the mobile phones of two of the presidents of the ANC who claimed to be victims of wiretapping: Jordi Sànchez and Elisenda Paluzie ; and of a former member of the top management of the secessionist entity, Sòni The Mossos, unable to determine who spied on the independence supporters: “We…
Friedrich Merz (CDU) is warming up to election campaign temperature with Maischberger. While he parries familiarly about the debt brake and citizens’ money, he gives Christian Lindner (FDP) a verbal punch in the jaw. In just under two weeks, the Union will present its election program. It should be specific, reflect the mood in the country, but not promise too much, which could lead to disappointment afterwards. With “Maischberger”, Friedrich Merz, CDU party leader and the Union’s candidate for chancellor, shows that he has warmed up for the election campaign. But first, ZEIT editor-in-chief Giovanni die Lorenzo, editor of Media…
Donald Trump wants to deport migrants en masse. But Los Angeles is taking steps: The multicultural metropolis is giving itself a special status – much to the annoyance of the Republicans. In light of the mass deportation of undocumented migrants announced by Donald Trump, the Californian metropolis of Los Angeles has given itself the status of a “sanctuary city.” On Wednesday, the city council voted unanimously for the ordinance that prohibits the city from using resources or personnel to implement federal immigration laws. The vote was linked to an urgency clause, meaning that the ordinance could come into force just ten days after it…
Amnesty International released a report on Thursday which concludes that Israel is “committing genocide” against Palestinians in Gaza. The report says Israel has “unleashed hell and destruction on Palestinians in Gaza brazenly, continuously and with total impunity”. Amnesty’s report is the first such determination by a prominent human rights organisation in the 14-month-old conflict. Israel denies allegations of genocide, accusing Hamas of using civilians as human shields. Amnesty International report concludes Israel is committing genocide in Gaza
