The man accused of killing 49 people in an attack on two New Zealand mosques has appeared in court in Christchurch.

Wearing handcuffs, Brenton Tarrant, 28, sat with a nonchalant look on his face as the judge read the murder charge against him. He did not show any remorse or request bail and was taken into custody until his next court appearance scheduled for April 5.

Several of those killed or wounded in the shooting rampage at two New Zealand mosques on Friday were from the Middle East or South Asia, according to initial reports from several governments.

Jacinda Ardern has travelled to the city with Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, opposition leader Simon Bridges, Green Party co-leader James Shaw and Police Commissioner Mike Bush.

Brenton Tarrant, an Australian, appeared in court on Saturday charged with murder. Two other people are also in custody.

Speaking a day after the shootings in Christchurch, Ms Ardern said: “Our gun laws will change.” She added that none of those detained had a criminal record.

Earlier today an Australian senator blamed Muslims & immigration laws for New Zealand Mosque massacre.

The first victim of Friday’s attack has been named by his family as Daoud Nabi, 71, who moved to New Zealand from Afghanistan in the 1980s.

The identities of the other victims have not yet been released. A total of 48 people were wounded in the shootings.

Mr Tarrant was remanded in custody without plea and is due appear in court again on 5 April.

Jacinda Ardern has travelled to the city with Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, opposition leader Simon Bridges, Green Party co-leader James Shaw and Police Commissioner Mike Bush.
