Arsenal have been better off for missing out on Mykhailo Mudryk, says Ian Wright

Leandro Trossard has proved to be a much better signing than Mykhailo Mudryk so far, says Arsenal legend Ian Wright after the Gunners missed out on the Ukrainian in January.

It looked very likely Mudryk was going to sign for Arsenal from Shakhtar Donetsk in January, with the club and player clearly keen to get a deal done.

However, the Gunners could not agree a fee and Chelsea swooped in to bring him to the Premier League for a whopping £88m.

After missing out, Arsenal turned to Trossard and brought in the Belgian from Brighton for an initial £21m, which could rise to £27m.

The 28-year-old has made a cracking start to life in north London, while Mudryk has struggled to make much of an impact at all at Stamford Bridge.

While anything could still happen for both players in the Premier League, Wright says there is no doubt who has made the better impression at their new club, doubting whether Mudryk could even have played as well as Trossard has been if he had joined Arsenal.

‘I don’t care what anyone says, Mudryk, and we’ve seen up to this point, he wouldn’t have done what Trossard has done what Trossard has been doing up to this point,’ Wright said on his Wrighty’s House podcast.

‘Mudryk, for his own sake, I do feel sorry for him because I don’t know if there’s anyone in the history of football whose had to have a transfer of that amount of money with so much politicalness around him. It’s almost unfair.’

Trossard produced a hat-trick of assists last weekend as Arsenal beat Fulham 3-0 and Mikel Arteta was full of praise for him after the fine performance.

‘When we talk about composure and finding the right colour when it’s looking really blurry in the box and many players rush passes, he’s the opposite,’ said the Gunners boss.

‘He got three assists and could have scored two. I think he was really impressive.

‘Not only that, he had an injury three days ago which could have taken a week, or another 10 days, but he was really willing to come back early and the doctors and medical staff did a lot of good work to get that.

‘It makes a big difference in the team. We needed him today and his contribution was superb.’
