Arsenal consider summer bid for Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi amid William Saliba concerns

Arsenal are considering a bid for Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi amid their concerns over the long-term fitness of William Saliba.

The Gunners’ title charge has derailed in recent weeks following a run of three successive draws and last Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City, who have since leapfrogged Mikel Arteta’s side back into top spot.

Saliba, one of Arsenal’s stand-out stars this season, has missed his side’s last six games due to a back injury with that dip in form coinciding with his absence.

The Frenchman remains sidelined and could miss the rest of the season with Arsenal concerned over the injury. Rob Holding has stepped into the side but has struggled to effectively fill the void at the back.

Arsenal are set for a huge summer transfer window with West Ham captain Declan Rice their top summer target but a the club also want to bring in a new centre-half.

The Daily Mail report the club are monitoring Palace star Guehi, who has excelled at Selhurst Park since joining the Eagles from Chelsea in a deal worth £18million.

The 22-year-old has been capped three times for England and has regularly worn the captain’s armband this season.

Palace are under no pressure to sell and it is unclear what their asking price would be for one of their most important players. Guehi signed a five-year deal after moving across the capital to south east London two years ago.

Guehi is also on Tottenham’s list of transfer targets.

Next season Arsenal will play in the Champions League,’ Gallas told Genting Casino. ‘That is a big competition that everyone wants to play in. I think that Arsenal needs to add one experienced player at the back.

‘You want that player to create competition within the squad and put pressure on William Saliba and Gabriel. You also want that player to help William Saliba and Gabriel improve because they are both still young and they can improve parts of their game.

‘If you look at the left back, I’m not sure what will happen with Kieran Tierney in the summer, but if he leaves, then they will need to add another player that can come in and compete with Zinchenko.

‘He needs to be under more pressure. I don’t think he is brilliant defender – but we all know what he can do with the ball. You also need a top class right back.

‘This season Ben White has helped out there and it works against the smaller teams. However, when the level is higher, it is much more difficult for him to get forward and so he makes more mistakes defensively.’
