‘Arrogant’ double rapist sent woman laughing emojis after sex attack

A double rapist who messaged his victim laughing emojis after attacking her will now spend even more time behind bars.

David Sam Jones, from Wrexham, Wales, had long thought he was going to get away with raping one of his victims only to be jailed for it almost a decade later.

Jones, who has been locked up since 2016 for a separate rape, admitted on Friday to raping a woman in January 2015.

The 30-year-old was 22 when he forced himself on the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Jones brushed off the woman’s pleas for him to stop as he ‘climbed on top of her’, prosecutor Patrick Gartland told Caernarfon Crown Court.

Pinning her by her wrists, the woman ‘froze’ in shock as Jones coldly told her: ‘Just let me.’

After the horrific act, Jones told the woman not to tell anyone before messaging her laughing emojis to tell her he did ‘nothing wrong’.

The court heard how Jones was jailed for eight years for choking a second victim and raping her in her car in October 2015. He ‘forcibly and violently’ attacked her.

His sentencing inspired the first victim to come forward, who told the court she is haunted by the incident.

Living with a ‘daily sense of fear’, the first victim is rattled by nightmares years on and has isolated herself from her loved ones, she said in a victim statement.

She didn’t report the incident to the authorities after it happened as she feared no one would believe her.

Oliver King, defending, asked the court to take into account Jones owing up to his actions (even though it was so late in the court proceedings).

‘It is significant that he has been in custody continuously now since 2016 because that’s allowed him to reflect on what he’s done,’ King said.

‘He told probation that he had a sense of entitlement to these women – that’s how he felt at the time – but he now recognises that’s wrong.’

Though Jones was set to walk free by at least 2026, he now won’t anytime soon after Recorder Wyn Lloyd Jones added seven more years to his sentence.

To the ‘blatant liar’ Jones, the judge said: ‘You thought you’d got away with it. In a totally arrogant fashion, and not long after, you committed a second rape and a host of other offences.’

Jones, as well as being added to the sex offenders register, was also given a life-long restraining order from the victim.

‘I haven’t read anything that gives me any confidence you’re sorry or remorseful for what you have done,’ the judge said to Jones.

Investigating officer DC Jennie Ribbons-Steen added: ‘He is a danger to society and I have no doubt he would have gone on to continue to offend.

‘I hope that today’s sentence brings some measure of justice and healing to the victim, and highlights that time is never a barrier to investigating a crime and bringing someone to justice.’
